Fruits Basket
Recently I've been reading Fruits Basket and finished it tonight.
I must admit that I don't normally read that kind of series but I knew a lot of people like it so I figured what the hell.
Honestly it bored me a lot of the time (I skipped over a lot of the Yuki/School Council stuff) and I felt it dragged on for too long (seriously it's 23 freakin' volumes, Angel Sanctuary wasn't that long and there was a lot more stuff happening in it!). However I did enjoy it when I wasn't bored and did like various characters from it (of course all my favourite characters ended up going many chapters/volumes without seeing them so that could be why I got bored a lot).
I did have two major problems with the story though.
My first problem is that if you added up every character in the story you'd get close to two dozen and all but two ended up in a relationship. A lot the relationships weren't even necessary and/or made sense; it reminded me of fics that fanbrats write where everyone is paired up because ZOMG BEING SINGLE IS SO HORRIBLE!!!!11 Umm...some of us like being single. Was it really necessary to pair up Ayame and Mine? Or Yuki and that chick who's name I don't feel like looking up? Kureno/Arisa? Hanajima/Kazuma? Ritsu/Mitchan?
Which moves us onto my second major problem. You have a dozen characters who cannot embrace the opposite sex or else they'd turn into an animal. This is a perfect excuse to have a yaoi or yuri couple (especially with one of the older characters since you'd think by that point they're be really sexually frustrated) and yet there is none. Not even Ayame, who I was positive was gay until I was blindsided with Mine being his girlfriend (seriously they act more like best friends with him being gay and her being a lesbian).
It just boggles me that plenty of shounen mangas have no problem with inserting teh_ghei into their stories and here's a shoujo manga that doesn't do it when there is a perfect oppertunity. Hell even Disney has Axel in the Kingdom Heart series who canonly loves Roxas; you know you suck when freakin' Disney is more open-minded than you are.

I TOTALLY agree with you.
I stopped reading this soap opera somewhere around Yuki/Student Council Arc (it was too boring)... since that I've tried many, many times to read it further...but I couldn't~~~~
Hatsuharu seemed to be a gay too, but then appeared that horse lady (Rin?) and yeah. YEAH.
Do you know any GOOD shonen mangas with TEH GHEI in them? Because I'm quite depressed at the moment (because of the lack of KuroFay -_-;) and I can't find anything good...
BTW, Axel's love was REALLY canon? I don't know anything about KH series (don't have PS2...;<) but everyone is talking about it... I thought that this pairing was fan's imagination >.>;
PS. sorry for my english ^^;; and for the intrusion...

I also thought Haru was gay at first. I really don't mind his relationship with Rin though since unlike a lot of the pairings that one was actually important to the story.
Axel is definitely gay in KH, that part is canon. The Axel/Roxas pairing however isn't canon since we never find out Roxas' feelings for Axel.
some shounen series with teh_ghei in them:
- Getbackers: I heard there's more in the anime (I haven't read the manga yet since I have trouble finding it) but I know for a fact that the manga-ka has said that the secondary gay couple in it is canon. In the anime the main characters of Ban and Ginji is practically canon, I'm not sure if the manga is the same way but I've seen plenty of pictures of them by the manga-ka where they're all over each other.
-Air Gear: Not much in this one. There's a gay character though who likes to steal kisses every so often from his crush who is the main character.
-Yu Yu Hakusho: A couple of minor villians have been gay and I've heard that the manga-ka has said that Kurama (a really important character) is canonly gay (although he doesn't get paired up with anyone).
-Angel Sanctuary: Not really a shounen series but there's a lot of action in it so I'm including it (it's more like a CLAMP series that's a mixture of genres). An important character is canonly gay and there's plenty of implied stuff between other characters.
-Prince of Tennis: No one is offically gay in it but it's so very very slashy. Some characters are obviously gay but they just don't say it.

I will check Getbackers (because I already know other anime series you mentioned ^^; I'm such a fangirl...). Thanks again!

Poor shoujo genre. And the whole Akito gender, and being single is worst, lousy excuse to wipe out teh gay.
*shakes head*

It cracks me up as well, that shounen or things geared more towards a male population have so much more blatant gay than things made for teenage girls. You think if anyone would appreciate teh gay, it'd be teenage girls and not teenage boys... As for Kingdom Hearts, anyone who is all like "AXEL'S NOT GAY, HE JUST MISSES HIS BEST FRIEND!!" makes me laugh for ages. I love denial xD

And exactly, there's more gay in stuff geared towards boys than in things geared towards girls, you'd think it would be the other way around.

I stopped reading that after I learned that Yuki and Tohru didn't end up together. But damn, Ayame is better with Hatori! >P

Ayame with Hatori would have been cute since Ayame drives him crazy. XD

Ha ha, speaking of Disney, is used to love their WITCH comic, but got annoyed with it when I realised they were doing that "Quick, quick! Pair everyone up with someone (of the opposite sex) as fast as possible!!1" thing. I swear, could they not have even left some of the girls single so I could pretend there was some yuri going on? Note to mention some cross-species yaoi, no? *sigh*
So I'm going to bother with Fruits Basket now after this review. Thanks for saving my time.

I'm glad your time is now saved and you won't bother with Fruits Basket. XD

There is no gayness in it? Seriously? To me the plot practically screams that it should have someone who can embrace eachother because they are gay -.-; *nods* the shounen series are more open minded than the shoujo ones... isn't it supposed to be the other way around? So wierd...
"you know you suck when freakin' Disney is more open-minded than you are. "
lol, so true XD.
Well, I don't like the big eyes anyway, they are... I don't know, there is something about them that I don't like. That said, I am listening to the opening theme for the anime right now... so;) That is at least very cute:D
