Well, shit

My WoW account got hacked. :(

I really don't know how it happened. The only WoW sites I visit are 'big names' (like WoWhead, Petopia, etc) that are suppose to be safe, I don't use add-ons due to being afraid of accidentally getting a key-logger, I don't click on fake scam email/links, I just don't know how it happened.

Both my laptop and desktop have been scanned and nothing has come up. That's the scary thing; that there could still be something there and I can't find it.

What I do know is that at someone tried transferring an alt to a different server. Approximately 6hrs later Blizzard suspended my account for 24hrs because they suspect that someone else had been accessing the account. This is followed by emails saying that the transfer has been cancelled. I've emailed Blizzard but I know that it'll take at least a day for them to respond.

The hardest part is waiting to see the damage since I'm still locked out of my account. I suspect by gold is gone (my main had over 38,000 and a bank alt had almost 5000, plus various alts had different amounts) but that can easily be returned/replaced. My gear can also be returned/replaced, my main was mainly dressed in PvP gear bought from honor and my alts had nothing special. But what about my Spirit Beast? Yeah, it was dumb luck that I got her but I don't want Bliz to say "lulz, tame her again" if she was deleted. Or what about the characters themselves? I know that at least one was attempted to be transfered but what if the others were deleted? Getting them undeleted is just going to be more of a pain.

I really want it to be tomorrow so I can see the damage and start tyring to get everything back back to normal.

And can I just add that I really hate anyone who buys gold right now. Because accounts wouldn't be hacked for gold if people didn't buy it. Gold is so easy to come by in game these days and the costs for all the expensive purchases (mounts) have greatly been reduced. There's no need buy gold.

If you have the money, BUY AN AUTHENTICATOR FROM BLIZZARD.

Seriously. We got one after my boyfriend's account was compromised, as we've had absolutely no problems whatsoever since then. They're not that expensive either.

I'm looking into it. I didn't think it was necessary since I thought I was being safe enough but obviously not.

: (((((((((((((

Man, that sucks so bad. No one close to me (well, 'til now) has gotten hacked but I've seen several people in guild get hacked. One even spilled over into the guild bank; the hacker took everything they could from the guy's account and the guild bank as well. That said, as far as I know they all got fully restored within a few days, with I think only the loss of enchants and gems on their gear.

Honestly, and Blizzard will say no, it's not this, but I blame it on battlenet. Ever since the switch there's just been a ton more complaints about hacking (and I use mods plus the sites you listed so I sincerely doubt it's that). Other than the authenticator the only other advice that makes sense to me is 1) change your password frequently and of course, make it as unbreakable as possible 2) use a junk or relatively unused email account as the log-in, not your main one.

Yeah, the hacker got into the guild bank. That upsets me the most.

I blame battlenet too even though I've seen Bliz swear up and down that it isn't a problem. I'm really suspicious right now since I've been playing for almost 3 years without a problem but now, here we are, a month after battlenet went live and I'm all of a sudden hacked.
