TokyoPop was so hit and miss when it came to their translations. It doesn't surprise me to learn that D.N. Angel wasn't the greatest.

I know Saiyuki is inspired by Journey to the West but I'm not sure how close it remains to the source. Saiyuki is basically about the four main characters travelling west to stop a demon lord from being resurrected. They fight among each other a lot so the journey is about them learning to work together so they will be able complete their goal.
