Name Game

Soooo...I got a review the other day for HC and in it the person mentioned they hated the name Atemu. Umm...why? It's his name. I would use it more often but I know most people use 'Yami'. Still though I think in all my fics I mention that Atemu is his real name but simply 'adopted' the name Yami.

Honestly...I never liked the name Yami. lol

Um, okay. Nutty. I use Yami because I like it better than Atemu (come on, it means darkness - that's so hot!!!!), though either or is fine with me when I'm reading, as long as writers are consistent with it in the fic.

Same here, as long as the author's consistent. My fics I have Yami if they haven't found out what his name is, and Atemu if they have (new fic, not posted yet).

That's a good idea and kinda what I do as well. Since all my fics take place after the Memory World arc I make at note at the beginning of the story to mention that his real name is Atemu.

I think the reason why I don't like Yami is because it's not his name and that I only know it from fanfics and the online community.

I'm so use to referring to him as Yugi, mou hitori no Yugi and Atemu (or even the Nameless Pharaoh). My brother also likes YGO and I drive him insane at times because prior to Atemu learning his name I normally call him Yugi and he always thinks I'm talking about Little Yugi, lol.

I don't know if I'll ever do a fic-verse of any length where Yami would regain his memories (I sorta like him as a blank slate, the poor guy) so he's stuck with Yami. Too confusing to call him Yugi if they're in different bodies, and "Pharaoh" would just be an odd name LOL...

Oh well. To each their own. It's just like the fact that I call Ryou "Bakura" in my stories since that is what he goes by, and I don't use the term "hikari" in my fics since that's also a fanon term. And I changed Rafael and Valon's name spellings because of my own hang ups, etc.

I personaly like the name Atemu better, I use it in MOST of my stories. I like the meaning of Yami... I think it suits him as a spirit, but when writing him with his own body I prefer to use the name Atemu. I mean hell, he went through all that trouble to learn it, had to redefeat Zork, had to fight Bakura, had to fight Malik/Marik for it, why would he suddenly drop the name and go back to Yami? His name was highly important and so was his past and i just don't think he would give it up that easily.

Atemu was an egyptian name and we all seem to write him as egyptian when he has his own body and when writing him in AU's so that name suits him much better than the japanese name of Yami and in the japanese anime, he was never called Yami.

but i do hate the name Atem.... can't stand that. Don't leave off the 'u' people!

And another thing that irks the hell out of me is when people have Ryou use the name Yami for Bakura. And when people say "...and the Yamis all looked...." when used that way, it should be lower case people. Yami with a cap is a name. Lower case yami is refering to what they are. To me, that kills a story when I see it capped out of context.

...and I'll shut up now, or there will be a novel here of things like this that irk the hell out of me.

I *hate* Atem! His name in Egyptian is translated as "Atemu" and it's pronounced with the U (unlike Mariku).

lol my country ygo publisher translated it to atem!
well it kinda confuse with jpn language term since most of last characters wrote in katakana were "-u" (like "mariku" and "ishizu") if it not end with "n"
