GAH!
Now normally I avoid the YGO dub at all costs. I live in my own little fantasy world where it doesn't exist. Unfortunately my brother does kept up with the dub to mock it and thus the following conversation happened.
Him: In the dub did you see that Seto goes with his father.
Me: Eh?
Him: No really. Remember the scene where Akunadin is telling Seto that he's his father? In the dub Seto says something like "I will join you father".
Me: O_o
Him: They also edited it so that Seto's eyes start glowing so that he looks like he's possessed or something.
Me: o_O
Him: Look it up on Cody's site.
Me: *goes to the right ep* Who the hell is Shadow Magus?
Him: Akunadin.
Me: O--kay. *reads summary and see caps of dub!Seto's glowing eyes* What the Hell!?! You're right!
Him: Wait til you get to the end of the ep.
Me: *reads more* You're right! O_O It says Seto's under some spell and agrees to go with his father. And LOOK! There's a screen cap from the original with the subs still on it where Seto says "I still choose to be with pharaoh"! That's exactly the way I remember it.
Him: Same here.
Me: Talk about the dub really screwing up.
UGH! UGH! UGH! Okay I can understand the dub editing out the swearing. I can kinda get them editing out the violence to make it anime for a younger audience because the dub only cares about selling cards and young kids buy the most of them. But why oh why must they change the FUCKING PLOT?!?!
I so feel like building a bomb right now and going to 4Kids headquaters.

It's bad I know
(Anonymous) 2006-03-01 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)Okay A little extreme I know, but considering the fuss those people put up over that purple Teletubie a few years back...as much as I hate to say it, but if they didn't dub it that way many of us living in the US would never have even heard of Seto Kaiba or Yami, or anyone else from that show so I guess I'll have to settle for the dub as it is, as opposed to the above worst case scenario I wrote above. Plus I kinda liked that part with Seth's eyes glowing, I would have prefered lite blue over yellow but hey it still looked cool. :-)

Yet that wasn't why I was so upset. I just felt that by changing things they were turning Seto's character extremely weak because now in the dub he doesn't have the strength to fight off his father. I mean he ends up becoming Pharaoh so his powers/abilities should only be slightly less than Atemu's, which is how things are in the original.
I also thought it was stupid because Seto's body (only his body, his mind is unconscious) gets taken over later as well, which leads to overkill. Therefore within 2 episodes you have Seto going from normal, to brainwashed, to normal, to body being possessed, to normal. If a plot like that is being used it should be spread out more because it will just become repetitive.
