Hmph! Considering it's HIS OWN Fault my brain feels like mush after watching back to back to back Saiyuki in anticipation of Gunlock #2, which I'm infuriated to say seems to be nowhere to be found locally, he's lucky I haven't sworn off homicidal trigger- happy monks for life!
I think Aya must be a blood relative of Kenshin. And now that I've finished watching KH:WK, I'm wondering how they arrived at Gluhen (aka KH:Eternity) -- ?
I'll fill you in because the stuff in between was only on CD Dramas that were not released in the US. And Gluhen makes a lot more sense when you know everything (until I found the CD Drama transcripts I was completely confused why everyone was acting so differently in it).
After the anime, Weiss started living in a trailer selling flowers from it while they travelled the counrty performing missions for the new Persia. Eventually they arrive in Sendai where Aya was trained when he first joined Kritiker. Events that happened there two years ago left the entire team Aya was being trained with dead or missing (at the time it was only thought Aya survived). Weiss is there to complete the final mission of that other team and it's there where Aya learns that one of the old members Kikyo is still alive and he betrayed the group. Aya kills him.
Fast forward a few months and the gang is now in Kyoto where Aya is being haunted by dreams of Kikyo. Then during a mission, Weiss arrive to kill the target to discover that not only the target had been killed but everyone else who was in the area. It's also around this time that Ken and Yohji start losing it. Ken starts becoming a blood thirsty killer (he gets really pissed when he shows up for that mission and finds he can't kill anyone) and Yohji starts becoming depressed since he made a vow to protect women and he's really doing a crappy job of it. Anyway on their next mission (also in Kyoto) Weiss runs into the assassins (who are also called Weiss) who have been doing the killings and Aya discovers that it's his old master Shion who taught him everything he knows about sword fighting and also who should have died in the Sendai mission two years earlier (Kikyo didn't know he was alive either). Shion and Aya get into a mini fight where Shion quickly beats Aya; he then orders his own team to leave and gives Weiss a warning not to interfer in their work again.
Now we jump to Kanagawa so that Aya can get his sword fixed as it was damaged in this fight against Shion. Also this is the place where Omi's grandfather lives and the old guy is quite depressed that his sons and grandkids were all killed. Then he learns that Omi is around and starts working his master plan of bringing Omi back to the Takatori clan. Not much else happens here it's just build up for the end of the arc.
After Kanagawa it's back to Kyoto where Yohji is more screwed up as he can't get Asuka out of his mind (honestly I didn't get much of the Yohji stuff but it's important to how he acts in Gluhen). Anyway Manx arrives on the scene with some bad news. She informs them that Shion and his team are 2nd Weiss (the current Weiss with Aya, Omi, Yohji and Ken are the 3rd generation of Weiss) who went missing at some point and are now working for someone else to replace Persia. Anyway they've been killing Kritiker agents and have captured Birman to try and get the current Persia to step down. Manx was in charge of leading a mission to rescue Birman but they failed and only Manx was able to escape with a fatal wound. She dies shortly after giving Weiss their next mission. Kill Birman.
Weiss isn't too happy so they try and rescue Birman instead. They find that she's been badly tortured however and during their escape they get into a fight with Shion's group. Birman tells them to protect the current Persia and then shoots herself in the head. Because they didn't receive orders to kill Shion's group, Weiss retreats only to get caught in a trap where two members of Shion's members dies. Wanting to mourn for his friends, Shion tells Aya that their duel will be postponed until later.
Aya now is having nightmares of Shion and Kikyo telling him that he's a killer. While Shion and his remaining partner Rindou kill the current Persia but not before he could give a mission to Weiss giving them their final mission. Kill Rindou, Shion and Nakatsugawa (Shion's boss). He then tells them to wash their hands of Weiss and live normal lives. Wanting answers Omi goes to visit his grandfather, who at the same time is cutting Nakatsugawa from the Takatori funds, making himself a target of 2nd Weiss. Rindou shows up to kill Omi's grandfather but Omi manages to kill him (Rindou) instead. He then sends a message to the rest of Weiss saying that he will not be returning. Meanwhile Shion rebells against Nakatsugawa and kills him. He then sends a message to Aya so they can have their final duel. They fight. Yohji and Ken try to help but quickly get wounded by Shion and to save them Aya declares that the fight is now one on one which Shion agrees too. Aya loses his sword so he shoots Shion with his gun. Shion then stabs himself with his sword killing him but not before telling Aya that he shouldn't throw his life away to be a murderer like he did, that Aya should return to his sister. Aya then collaspes from his own wounds.
Here ends the group known as 3rd Weiss.
But we're not done yet.
Fastfoward 2 years. Aya is now in the US doing the same old thing when he gets contacted by Omi requesting that he returns to Japan. Heading back home, Aya finds out from Omi that he is now in charge of the Takatori empire and as decided to restart Weiss with himself as Persia. He wants Aya to form a new team. Aya tracks down Ken, who's been looking to fight anyone these past 2 years and quickly Ken joins up. Meanwhile some gangsters have killed one of Yohji's girlfriends (he has a bunch of girlfriends whom he lives with and mooches off of different nights of the week) who was selling drugs and Yohji kills them. He wakes up to find himself in a bar with Aya who lets it slip that he and Ken have joined up (before rejoining Weiss, Ken contacted Yohji about getting back together but Yohji said 'no'). Yohji now wants to join them but Aya refuses and Yohji points out that it's Persia's call so Aya tells him to contact Persia. Yohji does and Omi agrees to allow him back on. Also joining the team is Kyou who got introduced when he was hired by some goons to beat up Ken and Ken probably would have killed him if Aya hadn't shown up. Kyou is looking for his brother's killer and is a character in Gluhen. Also a new character in Gluhen is Sena but he doesn't show up until then and they give his backstory during the anime.
This is the beginning of 4th Weiss and is why Omi goes from "I hate the Takatori family" to being Persia, Ken goes from soccer fan who teaches kids to "Kill! Kill! KILL!" and Yohji is no longer the fun lovin playboy that everyone fell in love with and is now some depressed stranger that can't let go of his past. Aya's mental well being has actually improved from the 1st anime. He isn't so cold and heartless anymore but during the last ep of Gluhen (and at the beginning of the manga Weiss Side B, which picks up right at the very end of Gluhen but alas isn't out in English) you can see he's worried about ending up a murderer like Shion.
Whoa! All that? So what's this OVA I've seen mentioned here and there about? Does it cover any of this, or branch off in a different direction entirely?
While I was reading all this, it struck me oddly how very much like the RK 'Legend of Kyoto' anime arc it seems....
Thank you, btw! If by some odd chance my Hubby surprises me with a RK 2nd Series DvD thinpack for my birthday, I'll send you the singles so you can see Aoshi in all his animated glory!
The OVA takes place after the anime (they're living in the trailer by that point) but a few months before the Sendai stuff where you got Aya's backstory. It really has nothing to do with the stuff I just got telling you.
But it's pretty cool and you get the first signs of crazy, 'Kill! Kill! KILL!' Ken in it. I don't think it's been dubbed though.
Umm...*tries to remember it* This girl Omi knows ends up hacking into government information with her friends and because of what they did her friends all got killed and almost her. Her brother also becomes involved and it turns out they want revenge on this US General who's stationed in Japan because he killed their parents. Weiss then gets ordered to kill them but because Omi is friends with girl and Ken agrees with them, Omi and Ken end up helping them escape.
Yohji and Aya then get orders to kill Omi and Ken which leads to a cool fight of Aya and Yohji against Omi and Ken. Aya, Omi and Yohji end up "dieing" and it's then relieved that the Persia they were receiving their orders from was a fake and that he had kidnapped Manx.
Then there's a plot hole jump (where would WK be without those, lol) where Weiss shows up alive and unscratched (seriously it they looked like they hadn't been in a fight at all) at the bad guy's place where they tell him they knew that Manx was captured because when talking to them while given them missions she had said she was allergic to black lilies which mean "lies" so she was basically telling them it was a false mission so they set it up where they were trying to kill each other. Weiss kills the bad guy. The End.
